Dear Brandy,
Losing your hair is one of the side effects of gastric bypass surgery. The good news is, there are things you can do to correct the imbalances that surgery temporarily caused. Because you are taking in fewer calories, the calories you are consuming are going straight to your organs because your body is going to send the small of amount of nutrients it's getting to the most important places in your body. So, there are not enough nutrients going to your hair follicles. Here's how to get those nutrients to your hair follicles: First, you need to take in a minimum of 60 grams of protein per day. Try 80 grams of protein daily if you can. Second, you need to improve the blood flow to your scalp so those nutrients can get there! You should massage your scalp 5-10 minutes every day. Don't do it when your hair is wet. When you have dry hair, use your fingertips, not nails, and massage your scalp in tiny circles all over your head. Third, some people take the supplements silica and biotin. These two supplements can help with hair regrowth. I think you may need B3 vitamin as well. Check with your nurse practitioner or doctor before taking any supplements to make sure it is right for you. Good luck and let us know how you are doing.
