Dear Cathy,
It is very worrisome to hear a loved one, or anyone, say they are thinking about killing themselves. When your Great Niece says she wants to kill herself, you must get her help immediately. That means calling 911. It sounds like she may not be safe. She needs to go to an emergency room for a full psychiatric evaluation. Suicidal statements should always be taken seriously, with immediate crisis intervention. Whether you believe she will do something or not, people who say they want to kill themselves need help. When you see her again, if she talks about hurting herself, tell her how concerned you are and that you need to call 911 to get her immediate help and to keep her safe. Leave it to a psychiatric professional to talk with her. Let us know how things go.
