Dear Zandra,
It sounds like keeping a clean house is making you very anxious. On a practical note, it is helpful to get a little cleaning done each day. I'm not sure how many people live with you, but it might be helpful to assign each person a daily cleaning duty. Clutter can become an overwhelming issue for many people and there are even TV shows about hoarding. I'm not sure if that is an issue for you, but cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)can help with hoarding behaviors. Do other people who know you think your living space is messy? Sometimes it's hard to be objective about our own stuff. Maybe it would be helpful to ask someone you trust what their opinion is of your space. And, sometimes our anxiety comes out in odd ways, it may be that something else is bothering you but it's presenting itself as a "cleaning issue." Take some time to think about what else is going on in your life that may be bothering you. You may find that your anxiety actually has nothing to do with a clean house! One last thought, sometimes when people feel that they have no control over a particular issue or event, they try and maintain control in other areas of their lives, like keeping your space super clean. Going for some therapy may help you gain insight into what is truly motivating the anxiety and the control. Good luck and let us know how things go.
