Dear Angel,
This is a hard one for all of us. Sometimes we find ourselves in relationships where one person is "in love" and one is "in like." It's not that we don't like the person, but we simply aren't in love with them. So how do we break up with someone without totally hurting their feelings? Of course honesty is the best course of action. And, it helps to start off with some positives about the person. Maybe you can say something like, "I've really enjoyed our time together, you are a wonderful person and I like you very much, but I'm not in love with you. I don't want to lead you on so it's best that we break up now. I only wish the best for you and it was nice getting to know you." Don't give any excuses. And try not to use that line about still being friends...that usually doesn't work! Many people end up staying in relationships with people they don't love just because it is too hard to break up. I commend you for doing the right thing for yourself and for the other person. Because truthfully, you are doing that person a favor too. Letting them go to find someone who will fall in love with them is the right thing to do, even though it hurts in the beginning. Good luck and let us know how things go.
