4 year olds like to test you!

Question: My daughter is 4 years old and she does not like to sleep at night. She has me up until 3-4am. I tried the old thing of waking her up early and that only worked for a day or two, but she went right back to where she was. I really don't want to put her on meds yet.

Dear Carol,
I can not advise you about child psychiatry as I am not certified in child psychiatry. I am certified in adult psychiatry. But, I can give you Mom advice! As a Mom to three daughters, I can totally relate to your frustrations around bedtime. Your daughter is doing what all toddlers do...she is testing you! She does not need medications. She simply needs love and support and most of all...patience. I would guess that this is a stage that most toddlers go through. I know how tired you must be. It is important to establish a bedtime routine first. Brushing teeth, picking out pajamas, picking out some books to read. You can say something like, "Tonight, I will read you two books and sing one song with you, but you must go to bed when we are done. If you don't go to bed when we are done, we won't be able to do this again tomorrow night." It might work. Certainly if the sleep problems continue, you should have your daughter checked by her pediatrician for any medical issues. Good luck and let us know how things go.
