Question: Hi, My name is Klarissa and I'm 17 years old and most of my life I have been an over weight girl. I have a lot of self hate, I just honestly need some advice on how to kick this self hatred toward myself because its getting out of control. I'm to my breaking point where my body is out of control. I use to take therapy for depression but I never did for being overweight. I'm at the point where I don't believe what any person has to say about me, I just want to be beautiful in my eyes not everybody else's. And right now I'm nothing close to that, so if you can sometime get back to me with some form of advice. sincerely klarissa

Dear Klarissa,
It is a challenge for most of us to truly accept and love ourselves. We are surrounded by perfect-looking people in the media. One of my favorite therapies involves self-help. Louise Hays is one of my favorite self-help gurus! She has written many self-help books. Like Louise Hays, I truly believe in affirmations. If you say it and believe it, then it will be. Here are a few things I want you to say to yourself in the mirror every day:
"I accept myself exactly as I am, right here and now."
"I am my own unique self. I am special, creative, and wonderful."
"I choose love, joy, and freedom, I open my heart and allow wonderful things to flow into my life."
Some people write these affirmations on post-its and put them on the mirror to remind them to say them every day. What also helps is making a list of all the things you like about yourself. Recognize your successes and praise yourself! You may find that keeping a journal is helpful too.
One of the most important things to do is to get a full physical exam with blood work. Sometimes we don't feel mentally well when there is something physically wrong. Sometimes a low B12 level causes depression. Sometimes a thyroid disorder causes depression or anxiety. Even vitamin D plays a role in our mental well being! So get checked out, and start saying those affirmations to yourself! Our thoughts are very powerful, use them to your advantage. Let us know how you are doing.
